MyHeritage Adopts Whole Genome Sequencing for Their DNA Tests

By Diagnostics World News Staff

October 22, 2025 | Earlier this month, MyHeritage announced that they have upgraded their at-home DNA tests to have Whole Genome Sequencing. By utilizing Ultima Genomics’ sequencing technology and processing at the Gene by Gene lab, MyHeritage is the first major commercial DNA testing company to adopt Whole Genome Sequencing at such a massive scale of over one million tests per year.

Until now, most consumer DNA test kits, including MyHeritage’s kits, relied on genotyping arrays, which read roughly 700,000 base pairs, or nucleotides. Whole Genome Sequencing reads almost the entire human genetic code—about 3 billion nucleotides—and provides a much more extensive depth of data. Customers will now have the option to access their complete genomic data, downloadable for free in CRAM format. Users will also be able to upload their files to other trusted genomic platforms for additional insights.

More than that, customers now will have a fuller picture of their genetic ancestry, hereditary traits, and potential health markers. All of this information lays out a valuable foundation for future diagnostics, personalized medicine, and genetic risk assessment.

MyHeritage always had an interest in Whole Genome Sequencing. In 2020, they pioneered a study that proved Whole Genome Sequencing could reliably support relative matching at scale. After that study, MyHeritage collaborated with Ultima Genomics and Gene by Gene in stealth to prepare the upgrade to Whole Genome Sequencing.

“This is a pivotal moment for genetic genealogy,” said Gilad Japhet, Founder and CEO of MyHeritage, in a press release. “MyHeritage customers will enjoy the fruits of this technological upgrade for years to come, through increased accuracy, deeper insights, and exciting new products.”
